Mad at God?

March 7, 2008

Where does the anger we sometimes feel over losses - deaths, betrayals, loves lost, etc. come from? Moreover, to whom are we often angry at? God himself oftentimes, no? Why him? Do we hold a certain expectation of him (if we believe in his existence in the first place) because of our preception of who he’s supposed to be?

Whether we be churched or un-churched, believers or non-believers - any one who at least acknowledges a higher power would certainly attach a certain responsibility to this creator for his creations, yes? And when this expectation, whether appropriate or not, is not met in areas such as this, we are let down in some sense or another. Let downs turn to disappointment; and dissapointment then to depression or anger.

This can be, for the true seeker, a time of opportunity to try and discover God more. Every characterisic which we carry are reflections of Him; if we ascribe to the idea that we are ‘created in His image.’ If we feel real anger or betrayal toward God for things that happen to us (are taken from us), then we need to explore what about our expectation(s) warrants an emotional response of anger, just as we would to each other.

And God wants us (I think) to seek what makes Him tick. And learn how things really work. Just as with mankind - the web of systems which we have created (much like God); governmental, cultural, economic, environmental, religious - it is the same with God. He has set in motion a tapestry of structure with which things function in the universe; laws of both physical and spiritual, which are not simply shut down just because a loss or tradgedy happens to one (or many). No more than we can shut our systems down just like that, without having cumulative ripple effects across the entire realm, just because a loss or injustice happens to some or one.

It would certainly be nice if it were so; on the side of man or God - but it simply just doesn’t seem to be the case. Perhaps as we learn just how much it takes to effect a postive change toward the greater good (without sending forth all the possible ripples which can occur, which we may or may not intend), we can better appreciate God himself and his structure and order of things.

Okay Mr. Alan, so I don't know if this was really what you were looking for in the way of comments, but I was doing my homework tonight and was in a "writing" type of mood. And you KNOW how I much I love to write letters....So here's my two-cents. (See! I can be as philosophical as you - HA!)...PS: Continue on....you're doing great. You ask where does anger come from? It is the rejection of good intentions gone astray, of feelings of abandonment and separation – a disconnect from relationship with others. Mankind was made to have fellowship with another. When losses are felt, either by death, divorce, lost lovers or simply friends departing – it breaks the physical and emotional bonds that were woven together. Anger is the result of pain felt. Pain is result of the tearing apart. God sometimes strips a person of all distractions from their life – even relationships – because the ultimate goal is always true fellowship with Him. By learning to put all trust and dependency on God alone is the only way faith can be nurtured. It is through our growing maturity that we realize that out of all relationships, He will be the only one that “doesn’t” leave, which frees up a person from becoming angry when others do. God said there would be troubles in our lives. But he did promise He would be there throughout. Even God gets angry sometimes. But as He has forgiven us for our falling short of His expectations (sin), we must forgive others. When God is no longer thought of as vague presence looming over us, but a relational entity that has feelings, loves, hates and temperament, then we understand what makes God tick. As we must spend time to get to know someone on a human level, so too do we need to get to know God on a personal level. Because the more we get to know, the more we understand how much he truly loves us.
