The Game Goes On

September 10, 2008

Olympics over, US Open too - with a new NFL season upon us once more. School begins. Fall is in the air. Hurricanes too. Political candidates vie for position. Economy still struggles. As do people. Life sounds pretty normal for planet earth, all-in-all.

Let us not forget that despite the routine, 9 to 5, life and death, and everything continues regularly - our ever-present need to meditate our private energies with thought to it all. Day by day, we see our times, our people always and ever trying to break through or break free to (or from) some mission or some struggle. The more our thoughts and prayers go out, the more we engage our world. We may affect things directly or indirectly. But to step out of our own concerns, if only for moments (or more if we have the wherewithall) and contemplate the situations of others (or do something about), the more we embrace our... humanity? Or our true purpose? Or something like that.

I sure don't find it an easy thing to do, always. I heard a girl, with pressing concerns (of what I do not know) speak freely to her boyfriend of that which affected her much; of how she felt, what made her mad, where she lied, but most importantly how she wanted to be thru it all. He listened and was attentive. I made a note to try and remember them.
I sat and smoked under a tree. A flower fell from it (maybe it was the smoke?). And it reminded me that somewhere (in more than one place most certainly) someone passed this day. Someone, like the flower, was special. So I momentarily remembered those I don't even know. 'Cause someday, its you. Not just because of that, but it does bring it home a little more.

I watched some movies which also struck me with provoking lessons. One showed a soldier, who was rescued by another (soldier), who lived on for many decades after the fact. The other soldier (died in saving him, of course). The surviving man visited the late man's grave even in his later years, remembering him, hoping his life was lived in such a manner which honored the other. Naturally, most know of what movie I speak. And how similar an attitude should all have who know of a savior who did the same for many.
Another story showed a woman who was stripped of almost all dignity and all but the bare basics to sustain a tenuous hold to life's thinnest thread. Thru this turmoil, she found that she, for all practical purposes, had faced her own death. In the tale's context, it gave the impression of that actually being a 'freeing experience.' Which, again, may be something of an attitude many might consider adopting.

Selfless concern for others, thinking of another's needs before our own, I think that is what you are getting at. Which not only is a great concept (!) but a commandment we are called to follow. Myself, I'm thinking its time I begin some volunteer work in the community, to break away from my daily routine. Will there be someone, someday, standing before our graves and hoping that they can lead a life of service and sacrifice as we performed in Christ's name? I'd hope so, but we all have to start setting the good example first.
